B2C (Business-to-Consumer)

Definition (canonical)

B2C (business-to-consumer) is commerce where a company sells to individuals for personal use — the retail half of the economy. Its physics is the inverse of B2B: one decision-maker instead of committees, minutes instead of months, emotion legitimate rather than suspicious, and volume instead of contract size.

The buyer and the consequences

A consumer decides alone, fast, and with feelings fully in play — brand, design, social proof and convenience are not decoration but the actual product surface. Consequences cascade: marketing is the core competence (in B2B it arms salespeople; in B2C it IS the sale); friction kills (conversion at every step is the discipline); price points are psychological objects; and reviews replace the reference calls of business buying. The buying journey compresses to hours — which makes B2C the natural home of impulse mechanics, scarcity cues and one-click checkouts, and also of their regulatory backlash.

Economics: volume, thin relationships, brand as the moat

Individual transactions are small, so B2C lives on volume and repeatability: LTV built from repeat purchases rather than contracts, CAC fighting rising ad prices, and margins defended by BRAND — the only durable answer to marketplaces and price-comparison one same-product competition. Two structural notes: consumer demand is seasonal and trend-sensitive (plan working capital for the December mountain), and data is the compounding asset — first-party purchase history feeds the retention flows that make unit economics work as paid channels saturate.

The legal layer that changes the game

Consumer protection is a design constraint B2B doesn't have: withdrawal rights for distance sales (14 days in the EU), warranty regimes tilted toward the buyer, price-display and strike-through-pricing rules, subscription cancellation mandates, and marketing consent regimes. Treat them as product requirements, not legal footnotes — checkout flows, return logistics and win-back campaigns are all shaped by them, and enforcement increasingly targets dark patterns specifically.

FAQ

Where is the B2C/B2B line legally? The buyer's role: the same laptop sold to a person is B2C (consumer rights apply), to a company — B2B; sole traders occupy a hybrid zone in several jurisdictions.

Is D2C the same as B2C? D2C is a subset: manufacturers selling direct, skipping retail — same consumer rules, different margin structure and channel conflicts.

What metric stack fits B2C? Traffic × conversion × AOV for acquisition; repeat rate and cohort LTV for durability — the e-commerce dashboard, essentially.
