Sales Funnel

Definition (canonical)

A sales funnel is the modeled path from stranger to customer, broken into stages with measurable conversion between each. The funnel shape encodes reality: many enter, few buy — and managing sales means knowing, in numbers, WHERE the narrowing is steepest and why.

The stages — canonical, then customized

The classic skeleton: awareness → interest (lead) → consideration/qualification → intent (demo, quote, cart) → purchase; B2B refines it into pipeline stages (MQL→SQL→opportunity→proposal→closed) tracked in a CRM. Two rules make stages useful: each has an OBJECTIVE entry criterion (a "qualified lead" defined by behavior and fit, not a salesperson's optimism), and each has an owner — funnels leak worst at handoffs, marketing-to-sales above all.

The math that runs the machine

Multiply through: 1,000 visitors × 3% to lead × 30% to qualified × 25% to proposal × 40% close = 9 customers. This chain answers planning questions instantly: need 18 customers? Double the top or fix a stage. The leverage insight: stage improvements MULTIPLY — lifting two mid-stages from 25%→30% and 40%→48% compounds to +44% output with zero extra traffic, which usually beats buying more top-of-funnel at rising CAC. Add velocity (days per stage) to the dashboard: deals don't only die by "no", they die by drift.

Where funnels actually leak — and the fixes

Top: wrong audience — fix targeting and message before volume. Middle (the classic swamp): slow follow-up (lead response within minutes vs days changes contact rates by an order of magnitude), no nurturing for the not-yet-ready, qualification theater. Bottom: proposals that arrive late, pricing surprises, no urgency mechanics, silence after the demo. Discipline that works: a weekly funnel review reading stage-by-stage conversions and velocity per segment and rep — trends, not anecdotes; the conversion toolkit applies at every stage, not just the website.

FAQ

Funnel vs pipeline vs flywheel? Funnel = the model of narrowing; pipeline = your live deals inside it; flywheel = the reminder that customers should feed the top (referrals) instead of exiting the system.

How many stages are right? As few as have distinct criteria and owners — 4–6 typically; twelve stages measure motion theater.

Does the funnel apply to product-led growth? Fully — stages become signup→activation→habit→paid; the leak-finding math is identical.
